Podverse is an app used to create and share podcast clips. This short case study documents my design process of contributing to part of the UX issues by designing a better onboarding process for new users of the app.

Challenge
There is no onboarding process for downloading the app as a first-time user. The first display after the splash screen is an empty homepage, as a new user has not yet added any podcasts. The stakeholders wanted this issue resolved.

Enlightening the User
The current design has no onboarding at all, so I chose an approach that shows the app's benefits and essential features. Using the existing brand guidelines, I combined good visual design plus best UX practices to design new onboarding screens. I also gave room for user control to “skip” the process and move to the in-app screens.

Designing an Empty State for the Homepage
Since one isn`t mandated to sign up before using the app, immediately after onboarding, a new user who hasn`t added any podcast to their feed sees an empty screen saying they have no added podcast with no further instructions on how to proceed. I redesigned this screen by adding a fun illustration, clear copy, and CTA which makes the empty state helpful and informative to the user as seen below.

Guiding the User to Subscribe to a Podcast
On clicking the “Subscribe to a Podcast” button, the user is taken through a short, two-step tour using tooltips to show them how to add a podcast from the different categories and filters available. I used Guided Task Completion here to familiarise them with the process in case they want to do the same again (add other podcasts to their Home Feed).

Prototyping
After designing the screens I created an interactive prototype to show what the implemented design will look like as shown below.

Conclusion
User onboarding is a critical part of a product`s design. It can either make a user interested in exploring a product further or drop off when they`re frustrated with the experience. When done right, it increases user retention and helps users get acquainted with the product easily.
